What Are The Sessions Like?

Session Plan

In this section, we use thought provoking questions to explore the stigma surrounding mental illness, and the impact of stigma on people suffering from mental illness.

This helps establish an empathetic basis for the discussion and helps the students realize the importance of the subject matter.

Duration: 10 minutes

Following the first step, we give a broad-strokes definition of mental health, mental illness, how it can affect people and general information about the factors that influence it.

We make sure to reference the most up-to-date evidence in all parts of the discussion.

Duration: 2o minutes

In this section of the session, we give out a survey that gauges the personal attitudes of the students towards mental illness. After which, the questions posed in the survey are asked out loud, and the students share their answers through a show of hands. Through this process, each concept in the survey is discussed and explained to point out false ideas and provide the correct narrative.

Kayan Mental Health Initiative is a mental health awareness project that aims to promote mental health literacy amongst high school students in Ras Al Khaimah. Kayan is working towards removing stigma and promoting conversations about the importance of mental health in our future generations. We aim to do this by visiting schools and engaging with high school students through an interactive presentation session.

All sessions are completely free-of-charge.

In 2018 we received a School Grant from  The Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research in Ras Al Khaimah, which helped us jump-start the program.
